Mary "Polly" Hines, 1828-1896, LA>MS

Mary "Polly" Hines, my paternal third great-grandmother, was born 10 March 1828 in Marion County, Mississippi, the daughter of Enoch Hines and Susannah Guy.  She married first James B. McCain, the son of Edward McCain and Nancy Bennett.  The couple was enumerated together on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Parish, Louisiana.  At that time, they had four children- Rebecca J. (Jane), age 12, William J. (James), age 8, Edward, age 5 and Simeon? B. (Samuel Bennett), age 2.

Another son was born from the union of Mary and her first husband- Nicholas James McCain, born in September 1863.  In the same year, Mary's husband died (cause of death unknown).

Mary married second Seaborn W. Stogner, on 15 September 1869.  He was the son of Ezell Stogner and Martha Pigott.  He was born February 1819 in Marion County, Mississippi.  On the 1870 Federal Census, Mary is listed in the household of her husband, Seaborn W. "Stayner", along with her sons William, Edward, Samuel and Nicholas McCain.  Her daughter, Rebecca Jane, had married Jackson Singley and was no longer in her household.  Also living in the Stogner household that year was Martha Pigott, mother of Seaborn.

In 1880, Mary and Seaborn resided in the Water Holes district of Marion County, Mississippi.  They had a child together- daughter Martha Ann, born c. 1871. Simeon B. (Samuel) McCain, still resided with Mary.  Her other children from her first marriage to had all married and moved out.  Her son, Edward McCain, had married Margaret Ann Turnage and the couple resided next door.  Also residing in Mary's household that year was her widowed father, Enoch Hines.

Mary "Polly" Hines died on 23 March 1896 in Marion County, Mississippi.  Her husband, Seaborn, died sometime after 1900.  It is unknown where she or her husbands are buried.  The daughter of Mary and Seaborn, Martha Ann, later married James Thomas.  The children of Mary and James are listed under his profile.
